For the first time since 2001, Gerlach is printing works on paper. The Print of the Month program provides an opportunity to purchase salt prints of extraordinary images from Gerlach's archives not currently available in galleries. Spanning 30 years of work, some of these images have been printed before and others are being presented for the first time here. These images were photographed on ultra large format cameras. The negatives are produced on film, not digitally enlarged. This process produces a zero grain image with full tonality, a nearly impossible feat with digital negatives. Salt prints are the earliest positive printing process dating form the 1830s, invented by Henry Fox Talbot.
Cortona Alley, 1995, 16x20" image on 23X25" deckle edge watercolor paper
"The biggest problem about shooting in a busy downtown setting is the cars. There always seems to be one in just the wrong place. You find a beautiful scene, set up a monstrous tripod and large format camera, and an ugly car parks right in the middle of it. After wandering Cortona with my equipment for hours, in the late afternoon I found this alley. For the first time that day, the vantage point through the arch allowed me to see through and out of the city, opening up the horizon. Of course, a car was parked smack in the middle of my shot. Almost as if it were responding to my inner desire, the car started and drove away. I was left with the sunlight peaking through the trees, beautifully framed by the arch. Not wanting to miss my chance, I set up my 16x20" camera and Hypergon extreme wide angle lens (circa 1900) and walked away happy."
